Lead magnets are one of the best ways to get more email subscribers. If you don’t have a lead magnet or you don’t have a good one then pay close attention!

The goal of the Lead Magnet is to maximize the number of targeted leads you are getting for an offer.

What is a Lead Magnet?

A lead magnet is something that marketers offer to potential buyers in exchange for their email address.

Lead magnet can be a free PDF checklist, report, eBook, video, software, plugin etc.

If you want to generate leads online, then your business needs a lead magnet. Period.


Because in order  to make people give you their personal email address you need to give them something valuable in exchange!

What Makes a Good Lead Magnet?

There are 6 things that your lead magnet should do if you want it to be absolutely irresistible:

  1. Solves a real problem – if your lead magnet doesn’t solve a real problem that your customer avatar has, or if it doesn’t give them something they really want, it won’t work at all.
  2. Promises one quick win – your lead magnet should promise (and deliver) one quick win. In other words, it should help them to easily achieve something.
  3. Super specific – don’t create a lead magnet about something general. The more specific you are about the benefit of your lead magnet, the better it will convert leads.
  4. Be Quick – For example PDF checklists tend to convert really well because they are so quick. eBooks or lengthy reports may make your prospects feel overwhelmed.
  5. High value – your lead magnet should have high value. Giving something with high value gives you instant authority and trust!
  6. Instantly accessible – your lead magnet will work best if it is something that can be delivered right away. People love instant gratification.

The perfect Lead Magnet will offer huge value within five minutes of the opt-in.

For example a perfect lead magnet can be a short PDF report of 2-5 pages that will give instant solution to a real problem!

In the other hand a bad example of lead magnet can be a long PDF of 200 pages that teaches many different and general stuff! (Avoid this type of lead magnets)

Your lead magnet must be very specific!

If your lead magnet is too general then it will poorly convert as you don’t give the prospect any specific reason to get it!

Create Your Customer Avatar:

So before even starting thinking about what your lead magnet will be about , what are you going to give away etc…

You will first need to create your customer avatar!

What I mean by that?

You need to understand what are your prospects/future customers needs. For example:

What do they care about? What are their goals, hopes, dreams? What do they struggle with?

This Is Important! 

When you create the perfect customer avatar for your business then it will be easier for you to target the right audience with your ads and offer them the right lead magnet!

If you do that then it will be easier for you to convert those leads into customers by offering them a good product that will solve their problem.

For Example:

Let’s say that your customer avatar is people who have a lot or some traffic to their websites but they can’t convert their traffic into leads.

So your customer avatar is people who are desperately looking for something that will help them turn visitors into leads!

If you offer them a lead magnet about email marketing it will not convert, simply because their main issue right now is to convert visitors into leads and you will offer them something that is 1 stage above.

But if you offer them a lead magnet e.x. “The Ultimate Cheat Sheet That Turn Visitors Into Leads” then this lead magnet is very specific and is exactly what your customer avatar needs!

Your lead magnet it won’t only convert high but you will be able to know what you can sell them and convert those prospects into customers!

This was just a quick example that came to my mind while writting this post.

Maybe it wasn’t the best one but you get the point! 😉

1. Guide/Report

Reports and guides are among the most common types of Lead Magnets.

If you use a Lead Magnet of this type – be careful. You could easily violate the specificity rule with this kind of Lead Magnet.

2. Checklist

Checklists convert really well and they are one of the best out of all the lead magnets, probably because they are so easily consumed. They condense everything that the user needs to know into one, actionable list.

Cheat sheets are essentially the same thing as checklists, but they give the user a list of guidelines, or a process that they can follow over and over again to achieve a specific benefit.

Cheat sheets are so irresistible to people because they take away the need to think.

They are generally very short (one page or so) and cut straight to an ultra-specific point.


4. Video Training

If it makes sense, and you have the skillset, video can be a very effective way to deliver on your Lead Magnet.

Software companies often offer a free trial of their software as a Lead Magnet.

6. Template

A template can be anything that provides an outline, or some sort of starting point, so all the user has to do is fill in the blanks.

In general you can place and promote your lead magnet anywhere you want.

The most common places to show your lead magnet is:

  • Inside Blog Post (At the beginning, in the middle or at the bottom of your blog post)
  • On Website/Blog – Exit Popup or Normal Popup
  • Using Landing Page (Promote your landing page with fb ads or anywhere you want)
  • Banners ( Using banner of your lead magnet, on your blog, on posts, sidebar or on any page you are getting traffic)

And now allow me to tell you the mistakes I made at my early beginning and how to avoid doing the same mistakes…

My personal Mistakes When I First Started:

In most courses nowadays there is usually a module that talks about Lead Magnets and Free Gifts you need to give away on your squeeze page in order to build a list.

However most of those courses don’t give the required focus that is needed. They just tell you create a squeeze page, give a free gift and build an email list.


Lead Magnet is very important for businesses!

Most people don’t understand how important the Lead Magnet is!

Well it’s not your fault.

Marketers don’t give the required focus so beginners don’t give the required focus either.

So what were my personal mistakes?

The mistakes I was making are very common and probably you have done the same mistakes too.

  1. I was making general Lead Magnet that wasn’t very specific and wasn’t giving a specific solution!
  2. I was focusing on many Lead Magnets at the same time.

The First Mistake:

I was trying to convert as much visitors as I could by offering general Lead Magnet. Indeed I was building huge email list but it was too general and everyone on that list had many different interests.

Result = low open & click rate, many unsubscribes, not conversions!

Conclusion: Create Lead Magnet that is very specific (Small Audience that looking for specific results/solution convert much better than Big Audience with many different interests)

The Second Mistake:

After seeing the results from my first mistake I was starting building many different Lead Magnets for many different audiences.

Result = I messed up many times, lost so much time building different lead magnets, squeeze pages, funnels, follow ups etc… (In the end I failed)

Conclusion: Create your customer avatar, focus on 1 lead magnet at a time until you have results! Create more lead magnets and attract more customers with differnet interests ONLY when you are ready!

These were my personal mistakes when it comes to Lead Magnets.

I see people do the same mistakes all the time and this is a result of the poor information courses/trainings about Lead Magnets.
